FAQ's
What is Silicone Paint?
Silicone paint consists of a PIGMENT + BINDER (Part A & B)
Although referred to by some as “paint”, SAM silicone colors are Liquid Silicone Pigment and must be added to silicone rubber or silicone paint base (A & B) to make a Silicone Paint.
Do I add the pigment to the Silicone Parts A or B?
It doesn't matter as long as you are consistent. A good rule of thumb would be to make a habit of always adding it to the same part, whether Part A or B. The industry standard, is to add the pigment to Part B. If you want to add more color pigment, you can add it to an already mixed batch of Parts A & B
How much Pigment can I add to color Silicone?
For translucent color, use drops of pigment up to 0.5% by weight. For intense and opague colors, use pigment between 1% and 5% by weight. With SAM Skin Tone Pigments, 1% to 2% by weight is usually enough - any more, will be too opaque.
How much Pigment is too much?
It's rare that you would ever need more than 5% pigment by weight to color silicone. Any more, won't really show and is a waste. Technically it is 5% pigment + 95% Silicone Parts A & B, but most artists calculate this as 5 parts pigment to 100 parts of Silicone Parts A & B.
Used on their own SAM Liquid Silicone Pigments will rub off of cured silicone. Silicone is the Binder that holds onto the color and makes it stick to your silicone casting. While it is true that too much pigment will affect the quality of silicone, the amount of pigment you would have to use, would be ridiculous.
Can I shake the bottle?
Yes, please do! Always shake your pigments prior to use to make sure that all ingredients and colors are perfectly mixed - a good 25 shakes should do it.
